Julia Kawaiamau (Napihaa) Carter

The sun rose for Julia Kawaiamau Napiha’a Carter on October 14, 1935, in Pukuilua, Hana, Maui, Kingdom of Hawaii. She was born the youngest daughter of John Kaaihala Napiha’a and Cecilia Kaikala Kupau. After leaving the Hawaiian Territory of the United States in 1956 she proudly raised 3 daughters and 2 sons in Louisville, KY. Her lifelong mission and commitment were the strength, perseverance, and connection of the ohana (family).

‘Onipa’a! - To stand firm and steadfast. To stay the course and be true to who you are.

Julia was a member of St. Louis Bertrand Catholic Church. A servant at heart she worked with Zegart Drug Store until it’s closure in 1992, served children at The Cabbage Patch Settlement House and continued to actively volunteer well into her 80s.

Her sunset occurred on February 14, 2023, at the age of 87 surrounded by her ohana.

She is survived by her 5 children who were the love and driving force of her life: Joseph William Carter (Carol), Jacqueline Dale Carter-Shea (Darrell), Patricia Ann Huston (Paul Winstead), Michael Anthony Carter (Natalie) and Mary Theresa Carter-Dunn (Jose’). Five grandchildren, Angela Carter-Lanon, Tiffany Carter-Edison (Arthur), Hollie Dee Huston (John Howard), Kimberly Shea-Nelson (Charles) and Delaney Carter. Seven great grandchildren: Joshua, Olivia, Robert, Cierra, Alexandria, Gregory, and Mya. Five hanai grandchildren, Jose’, Brent, Rodderick, David, and Matthew. Three great-great-grandchildren, Joshua Jr., Kyrie, Jenesis and hundreds of loved nieces and nephews across the states and islands.

Julia was preceded in death by 11 older brothers and sisters and one great grandchild.
