Charles L. Merkley

Charles L. "Charlie Kroger" Merkley, 85, passed away on December 24, 2023, at Sanders Ridge Health Campus in Mt. Washington, Kentucky.  He was born on August 26, 1938, to the late Clara Louise Corley and Raymond Merkley.

Charlie graduated from Valley High School in 1956.  He retired from the Kroger Company after 47 years, with his last location being the Southland Terrace Store.  He enjoyed bowling on several leagues over the years and at the old Thelma Lanes in Shively, in particular, even bowling a 300 once.  In his younger days, he was a somewhat regular patron at Duffy's Tavern, also in Shively.  Besides being an avid University of Kentucky sports fan, he enjoyed sudoku and crossword puzzles.  Charlie was baptized into the Methodist faith as a young man.

He was preceded in death by his parents; along with his cousins, Karen Grigsby, Patricia Denkoff, and Charlesetta Snead.

He is survived by his sister, Lolita Adams (Charles); and his cousins, William Corley and Wayne Corley.

Thanks to his many caretakers at Sanders Ridge Health Campus over the past two and a half years, and a really special thank you to the kind hospice workers who were with him every step of the way.

Charles will be laid to rest at Louisville Memorial Gardens Cemetery West, with no services.
