Arminta Poignard

November 4, 1944 — December 11, 2017

Arminta Poignard, passed away peacefully in her sleep, on Monday December 11, 20217. She was born to the late Elmore Yoder and Willie Mae (Marshall) Poignard in Louisville on November 4, 1944.
As a child, she attended West Chestnut St. and Zion Baptist Church. As a young adult she converted to Catholicism.
During her high school days, she was an active civil rights participant in the demonstrations and attended the original march on Washington. While she attended Eastern University briefly, she obtained her Bachelor and Master's degrees from the University of Louisville in Counseling/Psychology. During this time, she married & divorced William B. Gatewood and had her daughter, Adrianna Maria Gatewood. Later, she married and divorced Dwight Sweeney.
She belonged to the Black Psychology Association and was a Kentucky Colonel. She formed and organized a group whereby they worked to rename Walnut Street to honor Muhammad Ali, with much success and later worked with NAACP to have a Civil Rights Marker placed at 4th and Chestnut Streets. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
She worked for Head Start as a supervisor of teachers and retired from the state after serving 20 years as a counselor.
She leaves to mourn her daughter, Adriann Maria Gatewood, granddaughters, KeAira Wooden-Brown (Robert), Arianna Sadler, grandson William Hazard; great-granddaughter, Audrianna Brown, nephew, Aaron Cockerham, brother-in-law, Rev. H. D. Cockerham, and ex-husband and friend, William Gatewood along with a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 4:00 pm at Louisville Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 4400 Dixie Highway. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 pm until time of service. Entombment will be private.
Donations are encouraged to the Louisville Chapter of the NAACP, 1245 Catalpa Street, Louisville, Kentucky, 40211.
